Review - January Sephora Play! Box

I’ve been subscribed to the Sephora Play! Box since it first came out and a few have been hits while others were a bit of a miss. I thought I’d start reviewing them on my blog here so that others can see them in case they’re trying to make up their mind whether or not to subscribe. Let’s start off with the first box of 2016! :-)

Living Proof Prime Style Extender Spray – So this is hair priming spray (from what it says on the bottle). I  didn’t know hair primer was a thing to be honest. The back says that this helps to extend any style and make it last twice as long. I’ve banned myself from all heat tools lately so my idea of a style is just running my fingers through once after my hair air dries. I passed this one on to my little sister.

Clinique Chubby Stick Sculpting Highlight – this is a stick highlighter from Clinique, another product I passed on to my little sister. It looks gorgeous but I’m allergic to artificial yellow dye and Clinique puts it in quite a lot of their products, including this one.

Sephora Collection Eye Mask – I have this on as I type and so far I'm quite enjoying it. It's quite cooling and my little sisters are quite amused by the way it looks. I've used the full size version of this mask before and loved it so I have high hopes!

Tocca Beauty Perfume Sample in Isabel – Hands down my favorite product from this box, it smells soooo beautiful (can a smell be beautiful?). I’m definitely buying a full size of this as soon as possible.

Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare Alpha Beta Universal Daily Peel – Umm the name Dr. Gross always gets me hehe but I’m excited to try this out.

Dr. Brandt Skincare Needles No More – I. Hate. Needles. Even if I ever wanted to get Botox, I wouldn’t for the simple fact that there are needles involved. This little guy sounds like quite a miracle product with some fairly bold claims. I’ve used it once so far and it smells quite minty and fresh. Not much of a difference in the wrinkle I put it on (honestly it looks deeper if anything, I'm fervently hoping that's my imagination) but I will report back.

Along with the products there was also a little booklet with more details on each product and a card one could present in a Sephora store for more information on how to use this month's items.

And that’s the lot! Overall, I don’t know about this box. I can’t quite decide if it’s a hit or miss. It’s somewhere in the middle really. What do you guys think? Would you rate this a hit or a miss?

(I bought this box with my own money. There are some affiliate links in this post which means if you click through and buy something, I may get a commission.

  1. I think I wouldn't be too sure either. The fact that two main products (the style extender and the highlighter) weren't suitable for you makes it more of a miss, I guess, but then again you cant blame the box for that.
I am not subscribed to any boxes, mainly because I guess I´d be disappointed more often than not.

    1. Exactly plus even the other items...I don't know, the latest boxes haven't been as great as the first few. Hopefully the next one will be a hit. I didn't subscribe to any boxes for the longest time either, for that same reason but I figured Sephora might work out since I like most of their stuff.

  7. I've tried the Clinique chubby contour stick that goes with the highlighter and failed miserably, I cannot contour at all no matter how many attempts! haha I wasn't too keen on it though, didn't really like the texture. I do reallly want to try an eye mask though! I do face masks every week and never knew where to really get an eye mask from so I may try this! x

    1. Yeah I don't really try anything from Clinique anymore to be honest, they just don't work for me. It was a good eye mask and I think it's probably on the lower end of the price range for an eye mask so it'd be a good one to try for the first time :-)

  10. I had no idea Sephora had a subscription box. I have that mask and have yet to try it, but looks so fun! And I adore Dr. Brandt products.

  12. Eh. I still prefer it over birchbox/ipsy's boxes this month but I've actually made orders on their websites and got most of these products as free samples or in a promo code. But it is still one of the best boxes out there!

    1. Agreed India. It's definitely better than the other boxes out there but I hope it doesn't go downhill now.

  13. Interesting concept! So cute picturing you typing with a mask on. XD And you have gorgeous hair so no need to mess with it. Lucky little sis!

Do they send you things based on a profile or they just randomly select things to send you?

Yeah, Dr. Gross needs to have a second look at his branding there, lol...

How did you find out you were allergic to that specific ingredient?

And we found something not in common! You. Hate. Needles. I. Love. My. Ink. heehee....

I'll send a pic once I finally get around to your email, sweety. Been starting to freak out about the bar exam so I apologize for not getting back to you! Will do as soon as I find a window, my dear. ;-)

    Happy Friday! *mwah*

    1. Hi soul sis (that's officially what you are now)

Many thanks for the compliments, you're too kind as always :-)

They randomly select things, everyone gets the same stuff except for minor details like the eye mask (I got rose, some people got pearl I believe)

Poor Dr. Gross lol I think it may be too late now haha he has to live with it

It happened by accident honestly, I ate some mac and cheese and broke out like crazy, tried a lip balm and broke out like crazy, tried a moisturizer and yep same thing. I looked at the ingredients and that was the only thing all three had in common. When I paid more attention, any time I broke out it was down to the pesky yellow dye because it's in everything.

Haha mad respect to you and everyone else who VOLUNTARILY experiences the sting of a needle. I had to get a vaccine a few months ago and I was a total chicken about it, my doctor was trying to explain what he would do and I just said, please I don't care, get it over with! =D

Take your time love, I'm sending all the positive vibes your way!! You're gonna kick this exam in the tush, don't freak out.

      Good luck! xoxo

  17. Nice selection of goodies! I love Tocca's unique scents and have heard great things about that Clinique highlighter- too bad about the irritating ingredients!

  19. I'm currently on the waiting list to suscribe to Play! boxes. I don't even know if they've launched it country-wide yet? I know the initial launch was in a few test markets only. Anyways, from what I've seen so far it's soooo much better than comparable beauty boxes such as Ipsy! Sure there's no full-size product, but there are also no brands I've never heard of, and many things I'd be excited to try.

  20. I've tried a few of the Sephora eye patches and liked them for a pre special occasion pamper session. They did a nice job at temporarily minimizing my fine lines!
